Using the EM31 to measure ground electrical conductivity.

A portable gamma ray spectrometer is used to map the distribution of trace amounts of radio-isotopes.

The strength of the Earth’s magnetic field varies because of the presence of magnetically susceptible minerals, or iron-rich waste, in rocks. Here we are measuring the total magnetic field strength.

Measurements of the Earth’s magnetic field strength have to be corrected for additional effects from the atmosphere before we can interpret the geology. Another approach is to just measure the gradient of the magnetic field between two points. The students here are using a magnetic gradiometer to do just that.

A map of ground electrical conductivity across the site produced from the students data. The area of high electrical conductivity (green) highlights the boundary of the old landfill site. The areas of very high conductivity (red) are large metallic objects, possibly even whole old vehicles!
