Figure 1 Direct Conversion of Reactive Glial Cells to Active Neurons via NeuroD1 Expression Cortical reactive astrocytes and NG2 glial cells in stab-wound and Alzheimer’s disease (5XFAD) mouse models are directly converted to electrophysiologically active neurons by retroviral delivery of NeuroD1 in vivo. Astrocytes are capable of becoming glutaminergic neurons whereas NG2 glial cells are capable of converting into both glutaminergic and GABAergic neurons.
