3 Standards 11.5.4 Analyze the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment and the changing role of women in society. Discuss the diffusion of the civil rights movement of African Americans from the churches of the rural South and the urban North, including the resistance to racial desegregation in Little Rock and Birmingham, and how the advances influenced the agendas, strategies, and effectiveness of the quests of American Indians, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans for civil rights and equal opportunities.

4 Objectives: Following lecture and reading of this section, students will be able to: Describe how New Deal programs affected women and minorities Describe FDR’s attitude toward African Americans, Mexican Americans, & Native Americans Identify the groups that formed a New Deal Coalition

5 The New Deal’s effect on Women
Eleanor Roosevelt played a key role in opening doors for African Americans and women… Marian Anderson- denied singing by DAR FDR appointed women to government positions Frances Perkins- 1st female cabinet member in history Secretary of Labor, dealt with Social Security system FDR also appointed 2 female diplomats; 1 female judge Mary Mcleod Bethune organized FDR’s “Black Cabinet” & headed part of NYA, ensuring African Americans were appointed to administrative posts Women faced discrimination in the workplace

6 FDR & Minorities African-Americans Mexican-Americans Native Americans
Although FDR failed to support civil rights legislation, most African Americans supported FDR Mexican-Americans Mexican Americans supported the New Deal, even though they received fewer benefits than African Americans Native Americans Native Americans received strong support under the New Deal Economic, cultural, political freedom from U.S. gov’t

7 New Deal Coalition An alignment of diverse groups dedicated to supporting the democratic party Southern whites Various urban groups African-Americans Unionized industrial workers Labor unions flourish under the New Deal Wagner Act & other legislation that was pro labor Better working conditions & increased bargaining power Union members <3 million to >10 million ( ) Two labor groups clashed on how to organize AFL- only some workers (skilled) in an industry CIO- all workers in an industry
