Protests in Libya Protests emerged in several cities in mid-February. Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi took power in a bloodless coup in 1969 and has ruled his oil-rich country with a heavy hand.

Protests in Tunisia In what became known as the Jasmine Revolution, a sudden wave of street protests ousted the authoritarian president, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled for 23 years. The success of the revolution inspired protesters in Egypt and other Middle East countries.

Protests in Yemen In January, thousands of Yemenis protested in Sana, the capital. President Ali Abdullah Saleh responded by promising that he would not run for re-election when his term ends in Mr. Saleh also raised army salaries, halved income taxes and ordered price controls.

Protests in Egypt The most populous country in the Arab world erupted in mass protests in January. After 18 days of angry demonstrations, President Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled the country for 30 years, resigned and turned over all power to the military on Feb. 11.

Protests in Syria Internet campaigns called for Syrians to demonstrate in Damascus on Feb. 4 and 5, but other than security forces, people did not take to the streets. During the three-decade reign of Hafez al-Assad, Syria was a harsh dictatorship. Mr. Assad's son, Bashar al-Assad, has made gestures toward a more mild government.

Guidelines for Writing a Summary with Evidence
For a one-paragraph summary, discuss each supporting point in a separate sentence. Give 1-2 explanations for each supporting point, summarizing the information from the original. For a multi-paragraph summary, discuss each supporting point in a separate paragraph. Introduce it in the first sentence (topic sentence).
