Moon Phases
2
What do college students think causes the moon’s phases?
3
Half of the Moon is always bright from reflecting the sun’s light
As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different parts of the lighted area.
4
The revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon look as if it is changing shape in the sky. 4
5
The moon’s revolution around the earth causes us to see different parts, or “phases” of the moon
6
6
7
The Moon passes through eight shapes during a cycle:
New moon Waxing Crescent First quarter Waxing Gibbous Full moon Waning Gibbous Third quarter Waning Crescent 7
8
On the front fold write:
The moon takes 27 days to revolve around Earth (about one month) Half of the moon is ALWAYS lit The moon revolves COUNTERCLOCKWISE around Earth
9
New Moon Draw me! The moon is not visible from Earth
The side of the moon facing us is not being lit by the sun
10
Waxing Crescent Moon Draw me! New Moon to 1st quarter
We will see more of the moon each day Waxing = growing larger Draw me! 10
11
First Quarter Moon Draw me! Between the new moon and full moon
The RIGHT side is LIGHT, the left side is dark. We see half a moon
12
Waxing Gibbous Moon Draw me! 1st quarter to Full Moon
We will see more of the moon each day Waxing = growing larger
13
Full Moon Draw me! The light side of the Moon faces Earth.
This means that the Earth, Sun, and Moon are nearly in a straight line, with the Earth in the middle.
14
Waning Gibbous Moon Draw me! Full to 3rd quarter
We will see less of the moon each day Waning = getting smaller. 14
15
Third Quarter Moon Draw me! Between a full moon and new moon
The LEFT side is LIGHT, the right side is dark We see half a moon 15
16
Waning Crescent Moon Draw me! From 3rd quarter to New Moon
We will see less of the moon each day Waning = growing smaller 16
