Paranoid Schizophrenia is a type of schizophrenia characterized by visual and/or auditory hallucinations. It may also result in delusions about being plotted against which result in severe paranoia. However, those affected will still have a functioning memory and the ability to undertake daily tasks. Paranoid Schizophrenia; The Basics

4 Symptoms Anxiety Emotional Detachment Anger Delusions Violence
Hallucinations Self-Importance

5 Smeagol’s First Symptom: Hallucinations
Smeagol frequently imagines the voice of his alter ego, a more aggressive and abusive version of himself. The voice is a mere delusion but Smeagol feels as though he is unable to escape its abuse and often carries on conversations with it.

6 Second Symptom: Anger Smeagol experiences severe and unpredictable bursts of anger, particularly with Frodo. The anger often stems from his feelings of paranoia and his jealousy of Frodo’s right to carry the ring.

7 Symptom Three: Paranoia and Delusions
Smeagol lives in constant fear that someone is after the ring. Obviously certain people are after the ring, but his paranoia extends to an unreasonable extent. He trust no one and always feels as though he is being plotted against.

8 Causes of Paranoid Schizophrenia
All forms of schizophrenia are caused by genetics, the person’s environment, or both. In most cases, schizophrenics have experienced some sort of severe trauma early on in life.

9 He was once a regular hobbit…
In Smeagol’s Case… UNTIL…

10 He got worse. And eventually became the creature known as Gollum.
Smeagol got hold of the ring, which prompted the onset of his disease. As his attachment to the ring increased, he slowly began his decline.

11 How do we help Smeagol? In all honesty, he ain’t comin’ back from that. BUT! Paranoid Schizophrenia can be treated of course.

12 Treatment Paranoid Schizophrenia requires life-long treatment. Medicinal treatments are a must-have. Several types of antipsychotics are commonly used. Psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is also essential to living with schizophrenia. Both individual and family therapy session are extremely helpful.
