The Scottish Railway Preservation Society’s unique combination of museum, nationally recognised collection and running heritage railway at Bo’ness demonstrate the vital contribution that dedicated and passionate volunteers can make to preserving and sharing Scotland’s heritage Theme 2 The Steam Shed provides visitors with opportunities to appreciate firsthand the expertise required to build, maintain and conserve steam locomotives and understand the SRPS’ leading role in ensuring that endangered skills and knowledge remain a living part of Scotland’s intangible heritage into the future.

Interpretation Themes
The uniquely accessible working railway site at Bo’ness offers visitors opportunities to experience firsthand sights, smells and sounds once common throughout Scotland, inspiring them to remember and share personal or familial stories of the railways.

New Activities A range of new activities will be programmed as part of the Steaming Ahead project. We are currently working with consultants to develop the detail of the programme. Focus groups and user surveys will establish what visitors and volunteers would like to see take place in the steam shed and throughout the site.

New Activities The Inspiring Young Futures Programme will create opportunities for young people pre-school through to age 25.

Funding Overall cost for this project is just over £2 million
Grant request from HLF is £741,500 The rest of the project costs will be covered by: Trusts, charities and foundations £231,034 Museums Galleries Scotland £60,000 – awarded £75k BP donation £50,000 - awarded SRPS reserves - around £400,000 SRPS membership donations £40,000 SRPS volunteer time £12,000 Full cost recovery £516,645 SRPS member funding is currently sitting at £13,320 Although SRPS are committing a substantial sum from reserves, there is still a shortfall of funding that needs to be in place before HLF will grant the project.
