Absorption atelectasis—administration of a high concentration of inspired oxygen without positive pressure in an infant with respiratory distress can lead to nitrogen washout and alveolar collapse. Atelectasis can result in V/Q mismatch, shunting, and hypoxemic respiratory failure with persistent pulmonary hypertension.
