8. The Roosevelt Corollary
“Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.”
Strengthened U.S. dominance in Latin America
The Corollary added to the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, which demanded European powers to stay out of L.A. affairs.
The Corollary added that the U.S. would use force to protect its economic interests in L.A.

9. Dollar Diplomacy
Used to keep European nations out of Latin American affairs.
Using DD, American bankers loaned L.A. countries in danger of defaulting on their loans money so they would not be subject to European takeover.
Example: Nicaragua- U.S. helped Nicaraguan Govt. when they almost went bankrupt, the citizens revolted, the U.S. sent 2K troops.

10. Missionary Diplomacy
Pressured nations in the western hemisphere to establish democratic governments.
U.S. had moral responsibility to deny recognition to any L.A. gov’t. was: oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile to U.S. interests.
Wilson refused to recognize gov’ts that came to power through violence, like Huerta in Mexico.
U.S. invaded Veracruz, eventually Huerta’s govt. collapsed, but we still interfered in Mexican affairs (PV).
U.S. intervention in Mexico increased anti-American feelings there
