Organized Organisms Classification: an organization system that puts living things into groups according to similar characteristics, so that the organisms are easier to study. Taxonomy is the science of grouping and naming organisms. Aristotle was the first taxonomist. Linnaeus was credited with creating the naming system we use today!

There are at least 50 common names for the animal shown on the previous 7 slides. Common names vary according to region. Soooo……why use a scientific name?

Binomial Nomenclature
Binomial Nomenclature: a two part system used to give each organisms a two part name GENUS: similar, closely related organisms SPECIES: a group of similar organisms that can mate and reproduce in nature

The genus name is written first (always Capitalized).
The species name is written second (never capitalized). Both words are italicized if typed or underlined if hand written. Example: Felis concolor or F. concolor Which is the genus? The species?
