Monroe Doctrine: President James Monroe’s statement forbidding further colonization in the Americas and declaring that any attempt by a foreign country to colonize would be an act of hostility

The nickname given to a tariff (tax) by southerners who opposed it Abomination: anything greatly disliked

Indian Removal Act: A congressional act that authorized the removal of Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River

Trail of Tears: An 800- mile forced march made by the Cherokee from their homeland in Georgia to Indian Territory; resulted in the deaths of almost 1/4th of the Cherokee people
