1
THE THREE STATES OF MATTER
By: Mr. Wise
2
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
3
What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Mass is measured using a balance.
4
Properties of Matter How It Looks (Shiny ,Dull, Color, etc.)
How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough , Smooth, etc.) How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc.) How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.) What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, Magnetism etc.)
5
SOLIDS
6
SOLID A solid is matter that has that has definite size, volume, and shape. Particles packed tightly together. Example: Put a sneaker in a box. It stays the same.
7
Liquids
8
LIQUID A liquid takes the shape of any container.
Particles are loosely packed. Example: Pour juice into a glass. The juice will take on the shape of the glass.
9
GAS
10
Gas Gas is matter that has no definite shape. Gases take the shape of whatever container they are in. Gas particles are far apart. Example: The oxygen all around us is a gas.
11
Physical changes in matter
A Physical change is a change in how matter looks, but not the kind of matter it is. Tear Cut Folded Written Liquid Solid Gas Mixture Solution
12
PHYSICAL CHANGES
13
Phase Changes of Water ICE WATER STEAM (solid) (liquid) (gas) melting
freezing evaporating condensing (solid) (liquid) (gas)
14
Chemical changes in matter
Any change that causes new matter to be formed. Burning Rusting Cooking Film processing
15
CHEMICAL CHANGES
