Overview Our magical device is one that utilizes simple energy conversions to turn on a light. Amazing…..Right? This uses elasticity, what we believe is a perfectly elastic collision, and potential energy of gravity to git-r-done. Next slide.

Summary of Energy Conversions. Phase 1
Pulling back the rod creates elastic potential energy in the rubber band. Releasing it converts the elastic potential energy to kinetic energy in the marble. PEe = .152 J Vmarble= 8.72 m/s

Summary of Energy Conversions. Phase 2
Marble collides with stationary mouse ball. Conservation of momentum results in marble moving backwards and mouse ball moving forward. vmarble= 8.72 m/s vball= 0.00 m/s v’marble= m/s v’ball= 2.25 m/s

Summary of Energy Conversions. Phase 3
Mouse ball rolls down ramp. Along with the kinetic energy from the collision, the gravitational potential energy of ball is converted to kinetic energy down the ramp and adds to the ball’s velocity. Vball= 2.25 m/s v’ball= 3.71 m/s h =.445 m
