As educators, we can’t keep teaching the same way and expect student growth and proficiency to change.
Before we can change, we must first identify the areas of strengths and weaknesses.

The Georgia Department of Education required schools to begin using the Georgia Milestones Assessment in 2015 to replace the CRCT.
ELA and Reading CRCT tests have been combined into one ELA test on the GA Milestones.
Significant decreases in ELA and math proficiency percentages from CRCT to Milestones.
For a student to be Proficient on the Milestones they must score a Proficient (level 3) or Distinguished (level 4)

DRAMATIC decrease in proficiency in all subject areas when the testing changed from CRCT to Milestones in 2015.
CRCT data analysis (2012 – 2014)
6th grade social studies showed a consistent trend of increased achievement.
6th grade math shows a steady decrease in proficiency.
7th grade ELA shows an increase in proficiency from 2012 – 2014 while math shows.
8th grade students scored the highest in all subject areas in 2014.
Further drill down of Milestones is needed to determine current needs in response to the new testing system.

Strengths
ECMS 6th grade social studies scores are 13% higher than the state and RESA averages.
ECMS 6th grade science scores are the highest of all middle school grade and subject areas, scoring 11% higher than the state and 14% higher than the RESA average.
Weaknesses
ECMS math scores are below the state average in grades 6 – 8, only exceeding RESA averages in 7th grade.
8th grade scored below the state and RESA averages in ELA, math, and social studies.

Contrary to predictions, Hispanic students in grades 6 – 8 showed more growth on the mathematics Milestones than white students. This could be due to the increased services received through migrant and ESOL.
African American students are showing the most growth on the mathematics Milestones.
In 8th grade, English Language Learners showed 67% growth, which was 11% higher than the second highest growth group – students with disabilities.
Gifted students showed 1% more growth than non-gifted students. This data, combined with the lack of gifted-specific program, demonstrates that gifted students are being served just as non-gifted students are. How can we better serve those students to increase growth and achievement?

We need to reflect on our own practices to influence student achievement. We can’t change student’s backgrounds, but we can change how we deliver the content.
What can we do to increase growth and achievement in all grades and content areas?
Look objectively at your instructional practices. Drill down into your own content area data. In what area are students weakest? How can we better serve each of the subgroups?
