Understanding Where the Grants are Coming From
A private foundation, like a public charity or public foundation, is dedicated to carrying out a charitable mission. However, a private foundation is not a public charity because, instead of receiving public support, it is funded and controlled by an individual, family, or corporation. Things to Remember: The foundation has a mission; They are managed by their own board of directors. The Foundation determines how the funds are invested how and where the grants are distributed. The amount of funds available are typically based on required charitable distributions made throughout their taxable year. There is not a Universal Grant Cycle for Foundations

The community foundation field is one of the fastest growing philanthropic sectors in the United States today. Community foundations build and strengthen communities in a multitude of ways including: provide the means for a wide range of donors to create permanent funds to meet critical needs. grant funds to a wide variety of causes—the arts, education, environmental projects, health and disaster relief All share the common goal of serving: donors nonprofit organizations and the community as a whole Community foundations range greatly in asset size, but all funds are invested in diverse portfolios and management is a major aspect of community foundations’ work.
