Demand for workers was filled Cultural Diffusion – the process of spreading cultural items from group to group or society to society Cities expanded

7 THE GREAT MIGRATION Many people left their farms for the cities seeking better job opportunities Great Migration – the mass movement of African Americans who fled the rural south for the urban north Wanted to escape prejudice and discrimination for better paying jobs in the north

Cities became more diverse African Americans changed cities economically as consumers and workers Cultural impact through music and literature

11 PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION
The physical nature of cities was changed (ex. Skyscrapers) Central cities focused on industry and commerce Tenement buildings (apartments) provided housing for working families Cities acquired additional land as they expanded outward

15 SOCIETAL EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION
Overcrowding led to increased crime with the development of gangs Increased automobile ownership led to the development of suburbs Growing middle class could easily commute between residential areas and the central cities for business and recreation.
