3 Multiplication Properties of Exponents
Lesson 4.1 Multiplication Properties of Exponents Simplify expressions involving multiplication using properties of exponents.

4 Powers, Bases and Exponents
34 = 3  3  3  3 Exponent Base Expanded Form Power Read as “3 to the 4th power”

5 Vocabulary Power An expression such as xa which consists of two parts, the base (x) and the exponent (a). Base The base of the power is the repeated factor. In xa, x is the base. Exponent In xa, a is the exponent. The exponent shows the number of times the factor (x) is repeated. Squared A term raised to the power of 2. Cubed A term raised to the power of 3.

6 Review Use a rule to write the following as an equivalent expression.
a. 53 • 54 b. 42 • 48 c. x3 • x2

7 Write each of the following expressions as a single term.
b.

8 Multiplication Properties of Exponents
Product of Powers To multiply two powers with the same base, add the exponents. Power of a Power To find the power of a power, multiply the exponents. Power of a Product To find the power of a product, find the power of each factor and multiply.

9 Example 1 Simplify the following. a. y3x2y6x Group like variables together. Add exponents with the same base.

10 Example 1 Continued… Simplify the following. b. (b3w2)4 Distribute the exponent to each base. Multiply exponents.

11 Example 1 Continued… Simplify the following. c. (5p4)(2p3) Group like values together. Multiply coefficients. Add exponents with the same base.

12 Good to Know! A simplified expression should have:  each base appear exactly once,  no powers to powers,  no numeric values with powers, and  fractions written in simplest form.

13 Example 2 Simplify the following. a. 6x2y4z3 ∙ 3x5z2 Group like terms together. Multiply coefficients. Add exponents with the same base.

14 Example 2 Continued… Simplify the following. b. (4m3w)2(5m2w2)3 Distribute the exponent to each base. Evaluate coefficients and multiply exponents. Multiply coefficients. Add exponents with the same base. 42(m3)2(w)2 ∙53(m2)3(w2)3 16m6w2 ∙125m6w6 (16 ∙ 125) ∙ m6m6w2w6 2000 m12w8

15 Exit Problems Simplify. 1. y4y6 2. (p3)2 3. (5w)2 4. (4x5y)(3x2y2) 5. (2x2)4(3x3)2 y10 p6 25w2 12x7y3 144x14
