Basic Information Credit of: Names: United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) or Law of the Sea Convention Year ratified: Enforcement started in 1994 after Guyana, the 60th nation, ratified it. The first version was written in 1958; the current version is UNCLOS III. Type: International Current participation: 167 countries + the EU Enforcement: The UN will likely pursue any violations of this agreement, but since countries have agreed to participate in it, needed enforcement is minimal.

Summary of Details Basic legal framework for ocean activities
Countries and coastal states have rights over natural resources in 200 nautical miles (exclusive economic zone) extending from “baseline” (basically coastline) Rights over nonliving resources in continental shelf Several smaller zones dictating where responsibility for trade, taxation, pollution, etc., are defined.
