Solving Stoichiometry Problem
Step-by-Step
2
What is Stoichiometry Stoichiometry is the study of the relationships or ratios between two or more substances undergoing a physical or chemical change
3
We will be taking steps to solve the different equations
N2 + 3H NH3 HOW MANY MOLES OF HYDROGEN ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETELY REACT WITH 2.0 MOLES OF NITROGEN? The first type of problem we will look at is solving for a Mole to Mole Stoichiometry problem

Solving Stoichiometry Problems
Step 1. Balancing the Equation A balanced equation has equal numbers of each type of atom on each side of the equation. Chemical equations usually do not come already balanced. Making sure they are balanced must be done before the equation can be used in any chemically meaningful way. So we need to look at our problem and make sure that our equation is balanced N2 + 3H NH3 In this particular example, the equation was balanced, but you need to make sure otherwise your answer will not be correct.
5
Step 2: Find the Moles of the Given
HOW MANY MOLES OF HYDROGEN ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETELY REACT WITH 2.0 MOLES OF NITROGEN? After reading the equation again, find what is Given We are given 2.o Moles of Nitrogen that are needed to react with Hydrogen
6
Step 3: Look for the ratio of moles
Look for the Ratio of moles in the equation After the equation is balanced, the coefficient basically is saying that that is how many moles of that substance is needed to make the reaction If we have: N2 + 3H NH3 Basically what is being said is that you need: 1 N2 + 3 H2 to make 2 NH3 These coefficients make up the mole ratio 1: 3 : 2 So it takes 1 mole of N2 and 3 moles of H2 to make 2 moles of NH3
7
Step 4: Calculate the Moles using the ration The problem states HOW MANY MOLES OF HYDROGEN ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETELY REACT WITH 2.0 MOLES OF NITROGEN? So lets set up the problem using the Mole ratio : N2 + 3H NH3 1: 3 : 2 Mole Hydrogen = 2.0 Mole Nitrogen X 3 mole hydrogen/ 1 mole Nitrogen Set up the T-Chart 2.0 mol N2 3 mol H2 1 mol N2
8
Step 4: Cancel the units and solve the equation
Cancel Units * solve equation 2.0 mol N2 3 mol H2 6 mol H2 1 mol N2
