2 Factoring Factor- a divisor of a number (ex: 4 and 3 are factors of 12) Common Factor- a divisor that is shared by two or more numbers Greatest common factor- the largest common factor shared by the numbers Least common multiple- the smallest number that is a multiple out of a set of numbers Prime numbers- Numbers whose factors are 1 and the number itself Composite numbers- Numbers who have more than one set of factors

3 Factoring Prime factorization- factoring a number down to only prime numbers Factor tree- a diagram that shows prime factorization Base- the number used with an exponent (the number that is multiplied) Exponents (also called a power)- The number of times a base is multiplied by itself

4 Order of operations Order of operation- order in which expressions should be worked Pemdas- instructional tool to show the orders of operation P- (Parenthesis); E- Exponents; MD or dm- Multiply or divide which ever comes first left to right; as or sa- add or subtract which ever comes first left to right Expression- contains numbers and symbols of operation but no equal sign Equation- contains numbers and symbols of operation and an equal sign Algebraic expressions- a combination of numbers, variables, and at least one operation Variable- a letter that stands for an unknown number Solution- the answer to or value that makes something true term- a number, variable, product or quotient in an algebraic expression Coefficient- a number that multiplies a variable

5 Properties Commutative property- In multiplication or addition problems the numbers can be moved around and the same answer will occur Associative Property- in multiplication or addition problems involving grouping symbols the numbers can be grouped differently and the answer will remain the same Distributive property- when you multiply a number by a group of numbers, it is the same as multiplying each number separately Identity property- Addition: any number added to zero is that number//Multiplication: Any number multiplied by 1 is that number Inverse property- Addition: the Sum of a number and its opposite is zero//multiplication: the product of a number and its reciprocal is 1 Reciprocal- 1 divided by the original number

6 Inequalities Inequality- states that two values are not equal
Equivalent expressions- when two expressions have the same value Open dot- when graphing inequalities do not include the number (used with greater than or less than) Closed dot- when graphing inequalities include the number (used with equal too, less than or equal too, and greater than or equal too) ≤ Less than or equal too ≥ greater than or equal too ≠ Not equal (or equivalent)
