1 Mad About Science Reports!
Mrs. Biederbeck- 6th Grade GATE Science

2 Report Details & Expectations
Each month we will focus on scientists who have made great discoveries/accomplishments from diverse backgrounds. Each person in class will be assigned a specific scientist to report on and given a hard due date by the teacher. (Hard due date = little wiggle room on when you can turn in the report late) You will create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation report on your scientist using the template I provide you. All reports will be presented in class on the date assigned by the teacher. If you are absent the day you are scheduled to present you will have to present at the next assigned date. However, you are still responsible for turning your report in on time. All slides must include the information outlined on the report template and in the report guidelines.

3 Each Month We Will Focus on Scientists Who Have Made Great Accomplishments From Diverse Backgrounds:
February – Scientists of African American Heritage March – Women in Science April – Famous American Scientists May – Scientists with Asian/Pacific Heritage September – Scientists with Hispanic-Latino Heritage October – Scientists with Disabilities/Handicaps November – Scientists of Native American Heritage

4 September Scientists with Hispanic-Latino Heritage
Mario Molina - Mexican Chemist Reputed for his pivotal role in the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole Bernardo Alberto Houssay - Argentinian Physiologist Nobel Prize winner - Discovered the role played by pituitary hormones Severo Ochoa - Spanish-American Physician & Biochemist Nobel Prize winner – Discovered an enzyme in bacteria that enabled him to synthesize ribonucleic acid (RNA) Carlos Juan Finlay - Cuban Epidemiologist  Discovered that yellow fever is transmitted from infected to healthy humans by a mosquito.

5 October Scientists with Disabilities/Handicaps
Temple Grandin - American Professor of Animal Science (Autism)  Developed some of the most widely used animal handling inventions in the world. Geerat Vermeij – Dutch Professor of Geology (Blind) Research has led to better understanding of how fossils once interacted with the world Stephen Hawking - English Theoretical Physicist and Cosmologist (ALS) Modern day genius who's life work was primarily centered on research of black holes and the Big Bang Charles Steinmetz - American Mathematician and Electrical Engineer (Kyphosis) Made pioneering contributions to electrical engineering John Forbes Nash, Jr. – Mathematician (Schizophrenia) Nobel Prize winner – Focused his work on the idea of economic conflict, created the “Nash equilibrium” theory Thomas Edison – Inventor (Mostly Deaf) One of the fathers of electricity

6 November Scientists of Native American Decent
John Harrington - Astronaut First U.S. Astronaut of Native American Decent Thomas David Petite – Inventor One of the five early key inventors of Wireless ad hoc network or IoT Wireless Mesh, Technology. Mary Golda Ross – Engineer First known Native American female engineer

7 February Scientists of African American Heritage
George Washington Carver – Scientist, Inventor & Educator Made important agricultural discoveries and inventions Ernest Everett Just – Biologist Famous for understanding the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms. Charles Drew – Physician/Surgeon & Medical Researcher Inventor of the blood bank Patricia Bath – Ophthalmologist & Inventor First African-American female doctor to receive a medical patent & invented the Laserphaco Probe Marie Maynard Daly – Biochemist First African American woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry

8 March Women Pioneers in Science
Mae Jemison – Physician & Astronaut First African American woman in space Jane Goodall – Ethologist Most famous primate scientist in history Marie Curie - Physicist & Chemist Pioneered research in radioactivity Rosalind Franklin - Crystallographer & Biophysicist  One of the discoverers of the DNA double helix Virginia Apgar - Obstetrical Anesthesiologist Invented the Apgar score for newborns

9 April Famous American Scientists
Benjamin Franklin – Inventor, Scientist & Founding Father Made famous investigations into electricity and for writing 'Poor Richard's Almanack’ Barbara McClintock - Scientist & Cytogeneticist Discovered transposition in genetics J. Robert Oppenheimer - Theoretical Physicist Father of the Atomic Bomb Carl Sagan – Astronomer Helped popularize astronomy to the public Lynn Margulis – Biologist Developed the symbiotic theory

10 May Scientists with Asian/Pacific Heritage
Michio Kaku – Theoretical Physicist & Futurist Co-founder of string field theory Chien-Shiung Wu – Physicist Helped develop the Atomic Bomb Zhang Heng - Mathematician, Astronomer & Geographer Invented the seismoscope Jagadish Chandra Bose - Polymath, Physicist, Biologist & Botanist Pioneered the study of radio and microwave optics Tsung-Dao Lee – Physicist Famous for work on parity violation, the Lee Model and particle physics

11 Know Your Stuff Make sure you actually read through your PowerPoint/Slides presentation before you present! Understand what each specialty your scientists is/was means. EXAMPLE: Janet Lane-Claypon was an epidemiologist. Epidemiologists are public health professionals who investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury in humans.  Understand your scientists discoveries/inventions were/are. EXAMPLE:  Albert Einstein was famous for the theory of special relativity. The Theory of special relativity which laid the basis for the release of atomic energy, it determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and he showed that the speed of light within a vacuum is the same no matter the speed at which an observer travels.
