Peaceful co-existence: a policy developed by Khrushchev to enable capitalism and communism to exist side by side peacefully in the world.
Khrushchev was the Soviet leader after Stalin died and condemned Stalin’s brutal rule. He was a committed communist however and sent tanks into Hungary to crush anti-soviet revolts.

The arms race: 1950’s – the two sides developed hydrogen bombs (7.5 thousand times more powerful than a nuclear bomb). They developed rockets as well, capable of firing nuclear weapons (as opposed to dropping them).
The space race: first satellite was Sputnik (Soviets), first man in space Yuri Gagarin (Soviet). Soviet rocket technology scared the U.S.

The Berlin Wall: West Berlin was prosperous. East Berlin was not. In 1950’s people began to leave communist east Berlin to go West.
The Communist leaders of East Berlin built a wall, lined it with barbed wire, put landmines on either side and had watchtowers with armed guards. They wished to keep the engineers and scientist needed to make East Germany great again.
