Objective Understand the effect of competition between nations, namely weapons and technology. See the new leader of the Soviet Union after Stalin. Warm-up: Take out homework We shall discuss the answers to the questions given last class. Question 1-7 page 83.

2 Notes Peaceful co-existence: a policy developed by Khrushchev to enable capitalism and communism to exist side by side peacefully in the world. Khrushchev was the Soviet leader after Stalin died and condemned Stalin’s brutal rule. He was a committed communist however and sent tanks into Hungary to crush anti-soviet revolts. 3 Notes The arms race: 1950’s – the two sides developed hydrogen bombs (7.5 thousand times more powerful than a nuclear bomb). They developed rockets as well, capable of firing nuclear weapons (as opposed to dropping them). The space race: first satellite was Sputnik (Soviets), first man in space Yuri Gagarin (Soviet). The Berlin Wall: West Berlin was prosperous. East Berlin was not. In 1950’s people began to leave communist east Berlin to go West. The Communist leaders of East Berlin built a wall, lined it with barbed wire, put landmines on either side and had watchtowers with armed guards.
