INB pg. 23-24 CN: Theory of Plate Tectonics
EQ: What cause Earth’s plates to shift and move?
2
NOTES SECTION: The Earth’s crust and upper mantle are broken into
sections called plates Plates move around on top of the mantle like rafts
4
What is the Lithosphere?
The crust and part of the upper mantle = lithosphere 100 km thick Less dense than the material below it so it “floats”
5
What is the Asthenoshere?
Just below the lithosphere = asthenosphere The plates of the lithosphere float on the asthenosphere
6
2 Types of Plates Ocean plates - plates below the oceans Continental plates - plates below the continents
7
Let’s fill in one of our 3 Questions in the margin...
What is the connection between the Lithosphere and the Asthenosphere?
8
NOTES SECTION: Skip a line and make a major heading – Plate Boundaries
9
Divergent Boundaries Boundary between two plates that are moving apart or rifting RIFTING causes SEAFLOOR SPREADING
12
Convergent Boundaries
Boundaries between two plates that are colliding There are 2 types… (sketch and copy) Continental Plates crashing into each other Ocean Plate crashing into Continental Plate
14
Andes Mountains, South America
18
Transform Fault Boundaries
Boundary between two plates that are sliding past each other EARTHQUAKES along faults
19
San Andreas Fault, CA
20
Let’s get 2 more Questions for or margin...
What are the three types of boundaries? What direction do plates go for each?
21
SUMMARY... Let’s write the Summary together as a class…
