Wave Model failed to explain light’s interaction with matter Why did heated objects emit only certain frequencies of light? Why did some metals emit electrons when colored light of a specific frequency shines on them?

3 C. Quantized Energy 1900 – Max Planck comes to conclusion: matter can gain or lose energy ONLY in small, specific amounts called quanta. Quantum – the minimum amount of energy that can be gained or lost by an atom Prior thought = E could be absorbed/emitted in varying quantities
