4 FICE training Point of care ultrasound and echocardiography increasingly recognised as useful for ICM Recommended that all trainees gain some formal training in POCUS FICE is run by the ICS – specifically designed for critical care patients

5 FICE Register with ICS (£30/£50) Pre-course learning (ICE-BLU) Attend 1 day course Within 12 months post course: 10 directly supervised scans 40 logbook scans Triggered assessment with FICE supervisor Submit paperwork to ICS

6 FICE in Yorkshire (at Pinderfields)
FICE courses Several courses across the UK FICE in Yorkshire (at Pinderfields) Currently annually, may increase frequency All courses deliver essentially same content but prices vary

7 FICE mentors Barnsley Dr Chau Bradford Dr Bainbridge Chesterfield
Dr Padmakumar, Miss Tully Harrogate Dr Earl, Dr Oledzka Hull Dr Balerdi, Dr Bennett, Dr Rigg Leeds Dr Beck, Dr Breen, Dr Parry, Dr Powell, Dr Ridley, Dr Sira Scarborough Dr Sladkowski Sheffield Dr Bauchmuller, Dr Marko, Dr Morgan, Dr Parnell, Dr Rosser, Dr Woodward Wakefield  Dr Sandhu, Dr Sloan, Mrs Wilson York Dr Redman, Dr Whiteside

8 When to do FICE No specification as to when it is required Clear rules on timing of FFICM and base specialty exams 50 logbook scans is a significant undertaking - consider upcoming placements, mentors, and external factors

9 Other ultrasound training
BSE Critical Care Echo CUSIC 2 year program More advanced than FICE, aimed more at cardiac centres, or for echocardiography leads POCUS for lung, vascular, DVT and abdominal scans Often very useful on ICU Problems locally with finding mentors and supervisors Not yet a FICM requirement (nor imminently likely)

10 FFICM exam Integral part of ICM CCT Curriculum Can be taken at any stage during Stage 2 ICU training, but MUST be completed before starting Stage 3 MCQ paper (Jul/Jan), followed by OSCE/SOE (Oct/Apr)

11 Practically Stage 1 training covers ST3-4 If dual training with Anaesthetics, you need to get the FRCA to progress to ST5/Stage 2 ICM If dual training with Medicine/EM, you will already have the MRCP/MRCEM Advisable to try for first attempt at MCQ early in Stage 2 to maximise time/attempts

12 Resources FICM website - examples, examiners reports BJA CPD articles Guidance/statements from FICM/ICS Oxford Desk Reference Critical Care

13 Courses FICM run FFICM Prep course for OSCE/viva Run in Leeds, lots of local faculty Often practice OSCE/viva course run within deanery Other courses around the UK
