The Problems with Peace
What to do with Germany after the War
Potsdam Conference decisions
Temporarily divide Germany into four zones. The Soviet Union controlled about 1/3 and the remaining 2/3 was divided into 3 zones to be controlled by the U.S., France, and Great Britain.
The German capital, Berlin was divided into 4 zones
Established a plan to rid Germany of any evidence of the Nazi Party and Nazi beliefs
Nuremberg Trials – Allied military courts tried more than 200 Nazi military officials and sentenced many of them to death for war crimes.

3. Beginnings of the Cold War
Potsdam Conference decisions – continued
Decided on a plan for Germany to pay reparations for the destruction caused by the war.
Reparations were in the form of Germany money and industrial equipment
The Soviet Union received the largest share of these reparations because they had suffered the greatest destruction
Eastern Europe
At the Potsdam conference the U.S. argued with the Soviet Union about what to do with Eastern Europe

4. Eastern Europe continued…
The Soviet Union
Believed they needed a buffer zone of friendly governments in Eastern Europe to guard against an attack
Stalin promised to respect the rights of people in Eastern Europe to choose their own government

5. Eastern Europe continued…
The United States
Believed that Stalin planned on establishing pro-Soviet Communist governments throughout Eastern Europe
Believed that Soviet expansion would not stop in Eastern Europe
