2 Beginnings of the Cold War
The Problems with Peace What to do with Germany after the War Potsdam Conference decisions Temporarily divide Germany into four zones. The Soviet Union controlled about 1/3 and the remaining 2/3 was divided into 3 zones to be controlled by the U.S., France, and Great Britain. The German capital, Berlin was divided into 4 zones Established a plan to rid Germany of any evidence of the Nazi Party and Nazi beliefs Nuremberg Trials – Allied military courts tried more than 200 Nazi military officials and sentenced many of them to death for war crimes.

3 Beginnings of the Cold War
Potsdam Conference decisions – continued Decided on a plan for Germany to pay reparations for the destruction caused by the war. Reparations were in the form of Germany money and industrial equipment The Soviet Union received the largest share of these reparations because they had suffered the greatest destruction Eastern Europe At the Potsdam conference the U.S. argued with the Soviet Union about what to do with Eastern Europe

4 Eastern Europe continued…
The Soviet Union Believed they needed a buffer zone of friendly governments in Eastern Europe to guard against an attack Stalin promised to respect the rights of people in Eastern Europe to choose their own government

5 Eastern Europe continued…
The United States Believed that Stalin planned on establishing pro-Soviet Communist governments throughout Eastern Europe Believed that Soviet expansion would not stop in Eastern Europe THE CONFLICT WORSENS!

6 The Conflict Worsens The Cold War
A era of tension and hostility between the United States and the Soviet Unions More than just a military rivalry A struggle for power and control between two nations with very different forms of government, economic systems, and ways of life (communism vs. capitalist d democracy)

7 The Conflict Worsens continued
The Cold War Communism spreads throughout Eastern Europe with the backing of Soviet troops Soviet Union fails to remove Iran worsening the tension between them and western democracies. Truman, “Another war is in the making.” Stalin publicly stated that he believed war between the East and West was bound to happen in the future.
