Road Map to Success: The Cold War at Home At the end of World War II, both the United States and Soviet Russia believed their economic and political systems directly threatened each others. It is hard to imagine the war that literally shaped the power structure of the modern world was a war where not one bullet was directly fired between the United States and the Soviet Union. But, that is exactly what happened. Sports, technology, ideology, diplomacy and patience were the ingredients that composed this truly fascinating war both abroad, and at home. While Communist Russia tried to spread its ideology and influence throughout the world, America believed it must at all costs contain the spread of communism to again, keep the world safe for democracy. If you were suspected of being a communist, you could lose your job, friends, family, house, and maybe even your life. “McCarthyism” took place during this period of intense suspicion and hysteria. Would you have been labeled as a communist sympathizer? You will master the following standards: USII.22: Analyze the causes and consequences of important domestic Cold War trends. USII.23: Analyze the following domestic policies of Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. A. Truman’s Fair Deal B. The Taft-Hartley Act (1947) C. Response to the Soviet’s launching of Sputnik D.Eisenhower's civil rights record USII.24:Analyze the roots of domestic anticommunism as well as the origins and consequences of McCarthyism.
