3 Polar Coordinates The polar coordinate system records locations using distances and angles. The origin is called the pole. 6 Coterminal Angles Due to the existence of coterminal angles, the location of polar coordinates are not unique. As such, a point 𝑃(π‘Ÿ,πœƒ) can have polar coordinates involving all coterminal angles of πœƒ. As such, 𝑃(π‘Ÿ,πœƒ) also has coordinates (π‘Ÿ,πœƒΒ±360) or (π‘Ÿ,πœƒΒ±2πœ‹)

9 Expressing Yourself An equation expressed in terms of polar coordinates is called a polar equation π‘Ÿ=2 sin πœƒ A polar graph is the set of all points with coordinates π‘Ÿ,πœƒ that satisfy a given polar equation Just as graphs like x = 2 or y = -3 are constant on the Cartesian coordinate system, graphs of the polar equations r = k or πœƒ=π‘˜ are also constant. As such, these graphs are considered basic in the polar coordinate system by mathematicians.

The coordinates of the planes are 𝐴( 5,310 π‘œ ) and 𝐡( 6,345 π‘œ ), where the directed distance is measured in miles. Sketch the graph of this situation. If regulations prohibit airplanes from passing within three miles of each other, are these airplanes in violation? Explain.

13 Bogey Inbound! A naval radar is tracking two aircraft carriers. The coordinates of the two carriers are ( 8,150 π‘œ ) and ( 3,65 π‘œ ), with r measured in miles. Sketch a graph of this situation. What is the distance between the two aircraft carriers?
