1 Prioritising the Needs in the Central and Eastern Europe Region and identifying the Common issues, steps for the future 22 & 23 February 2018, Lodz, Poland

2 Gaps and Priorities

3 The regional workshop in 2015 in the African, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American and Caribbean regions all took time to discuss gaps, needs and priority actions at the regional level. They are provided in the coming slides. The idea is not to review these and see which have been done, or what is the current status, but to give the CEE region an idea of the kinds of gaps and priorities that other regions have identified.

4 African regional workshop - needs
Outlined the necessity of a needs assessment, 3 areas: Examine available expertise/ human resources; Examine existing national policies to identify gaps and make relevant amendments: Examine current status of infrastructure

5 African regional workshop - actions
PRIORITY ACTIONS Establish an African network on nanosafety (done in workshop); Carry out status survey of nanomaterials/nanoparticles; Develop/establish national working groups; Develop/strengthen coordination mechanisms; Sustained awareness raising and sensitization activities on nanomaterials/products and nanosafety; Develop legal framework for nanosafety; Carry out capacity building exercises; Develop guidelines for workplace safety (see WHO guidelines); Monitoring of nanomaterial/particles in industry.

6 Asia-Pacific regional workshop – final outcomes
to establish a strong network/communication hub to continue collaboration with the nanosafety working group under the umbrella of Asia Nano Forum; to raise the awareness of nanosafety by organizing training workshops; to develop the standardization / harmonization mark in the region (e.g. NanoQ in Thailand and NanoMark in Taiwan); to encourage the strong commitment from local governments.

7 Latin American and Caribbean regional workshop – gaps
Lack of national and regional information-sharing, which hinders both transfer of knowledge and collaborative activities; Lack of awareness among workers and consumers on presence and risks of nanomaterials, including insufficient labelling systems; Likewise, there is insufficient communication of potential benefits of nanomaterials; Need for greater infrastructure to evaluate physical, health or environmental hazards;

8 Latin American and Caribbean regional workshop – gaps
Demand for more significant training and certification processes for nanosafety issues; Low level of collaboration between industry and academia; Need to include programmes on management of nanowaste, as part of the broader waste management activities; Countries do not have policies and legislation explicitly related to nanomaterials; Need to coordinate work of the region’s standards institutes, to generate synergies on safety standards.

9 Latin American and Caribbean regional workshop – priority actions
Establishing a nanosafety network among a broad range of stakeholders; Implement consumer education programs, introducing the concept of sustainable consumption and production; Build capacities in the region, taking into account infrastructure, laboratories, human resources, and the education of students; Establish a process to promote a nanosafety accreditation program for institutions and agencies; Establish national requirements for the registration of nanomaterials, and identify products containing nanomaterials;

10 What now for the CEE region?
What are the regions’ gaps and priority actions? Please split into two working groups and discuss: the current gaps in the region priority actions up to 2020 (‘short-term’) priority actions beyond 2020 1 moderator for each group, 1 reporter (please submit notes to UNITAR in word/ )
