Fought over who had the right to succeed Muhammad as a caliph Split into two groups Sunni Shia Still split to this day

Shia: believed Ali, Muhammad’s son in law was right heir Sunni: outnumbered Shia, believed Umayyad caliphs as rightful rulers

700s- anger against Umayyad caliphs Shia Muslims overthrew and Abbasid dynasty came to power until 1258 Focused on trade and culture Baghdad became capital city

Who are the Seljuk Turks?
Nomads and great warriors Seized Baghdad in 1055 Took control of army and government but allow Abbasid caliph to manage religious matters Seljuk rulers called himself sultan 1258- Mongols stormed Baghdad, burned it down, and killed 50,000 people- ending Arab empire

The Ottomans Late 1200s- took over much of the Mediterranean area Leader was called Sultan Suleiman I- organized Ottoman laws, built schools, and mosques Islam was main religion Muslims received special privileges

The Safavids: 1501- Shia leader named Ismail named himself king of Persia Founded Safavid dynasty Persian spread as a language of culture and trade Urdu is still spoken today

The Moguls: 1500s- set up Muslim empire in India Akbar, ruler, allowed people to practice their religions After his rule, that ended 1600s- Sikhs and Hindus rebelled, allowing Europeans to take control

What two groups did the Muslims divide into? In addition to the Seljuks, who else used the title sultan? Who burned down Baghdad? What happened as a result of Baghdad being burned? What allowed the Europeans to take control in the 1600s?
