2 A History of Haiku Unknown in the US until the 1950’s
7th Century Japan: Narrative Poems “Uta” : Short lyrical poems Topics included: prayers, celebrations, planting, harvesting, and courting “Waka” : Later became known as “Tanka”

3 Tanka create a Tanka ( ) poem about one of the following topics Topic 1: Waterfalls Topic 2: Sunlight Topic 3: Difficult Times Topic 4: The Urban Jungle ( aka city) When that is complete write a haiku (5-7-5) about something that is important to or interests you.

4 A History of Haiku Masaoka Shiki
Put “western” flavor on Japanese Poetry Focused on the sequence thus creating the modern Haiku

5 Haiku in the US Did not become popular until the 1950’s

6 Evolution of Haiku Haiku has transitioned from strictly being about nature, to also being about societal and urban issues. Why do you think that that transition exists? What was important to the culture when Haiku was introduced vs what was important to culture now.
