1 Picturing Motion Section 3.1
Physics

2 Objectives Draw and use motion diagrams to describe motion.
Use a particle model to represent a moving object.

3 Motion Diagrams Used to study motion. Like a frame in an old movie.
All the frames are stacked on top of each other. Def: A series of images of a moving object that records its position after equal time intervals.

4 Operational Definitions
Speeding up Slowing down At rest Constant speed

5 Examples of Motion Diagrams
Pg 45 in your textbooks

6 The Particle Model Exactly the same as a motion diagram.
Instead of a person or picture series, you just use a dot (particle) to represent the object moving.

8 Questions pg. 46

9 Questions Use the particle model to draw a motion diagram for a runner moving at a constant speed. Use the particle model to draw a motion diagram for a runner starting at rest and speeding up. Use the particle model to draw a motion diagram for a car that starts from rest, speeds up to a constant speed, and then slows to a stop.
