3. School Procedures School begins promptly at 8.35 a.m.
Try to avoid excessive lateness and absences
If your child is absent, please send in a note the next day
Children are expected and encouraged to be respectful towards adults and peers.
YPS Code of Conduct is strictly enforced
Please call the school or write a note if your child will not be taking the bus or if your child is getting picked up by someone not listed on the emergency card.

4. Cell Phones
Children are not allowed to use cell phones during the school day.
If you need to get in touch with your child, you can call the school at
If your child is seen using his/her phone during school more than once, it will be taken away and held by the administration until the end of the school day.

5. Important to know…
Homework Folder - Important information is sent home on a regular basis with the students. This is a communication tool between the teacher and parent. Please ensure you check the folder daily and have on going communication about school with your child.
Homework – Homework is extremely important as it is a reinforcement of what was previously taught in school. Students are expected to write their homework down at the end of the day in their homework notebook. They are given ample time to do so.
Monthly Folder Report -Every month I will sent home a folder with a cover letter along with your child’s exam and/or quizzes for that month. You must sign the cover page AND every exam/quiz. The folder must be returned to school with all the documents inside. Teachers will return the exams/quizzes after folders are returned. This will ensure that parents are aware of their child’s progress.

7. Math Curriculum Common Core Learning Standards CCLS 4th Grade
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
Gain familiarity with factors and multiples.
Generate and analyze patterns.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic
Number and Operations—Fractions
Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.
Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings
of operations on whole numbers.
Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions.
Measurement and Data
Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a
larger unit to a smaller unit.
Represent and interpret data.
Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles.
Geometry
Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles
We will be using the math modules from the NYS website Engageny.org.
Students will be provided with
copies of each module as we go along.
These copies will be your child’s workbook.
Lost or destroyed copies will be hard to replace, so please ensure that your child takes care of math hand-outs.

8. Literacy Curriculum Literacy Program : Journeys
Aligned to the NYS Common Core Standards
Components of Journeys:
Whole-Group Instruction
Writing
Spelling, Grammar
Vocabulary and Vocabulary Strategies
Differentiated Instruction (Small-Group)
Aside from using Journeys, 4th grade will be reading trade books and using parts of the ELA Common Core Modules.
Student will also have to complete a Reading Log in conjunction with their daily independent reading of 20 minutes a night.

10. Homework Homework will be given every night.
H.W. needs to be completed every night.
For 4th grade homework is estimated to be between minutes a night.
Homework Components:
Independent Reading (20 minutes or more per night)
Read a book and complete reading log
ELA
Vocabulary/Spelling Worksheet
Reading Comprehension Stories (Not given every night)
Science and/or Social Studies (Not every night)
Math Module Homework or Worksheet

11. Grading Policy 4 100-90 3 89-75 2 74-60 1 59 and below

Classwork, Reading Responses, Homework, Class Participation are also taken into consideration when averaging grades.

12. Rewards and Incentives
We use a scoreboard to monitor student behavior and reward with time for desired activities.
Students can earn small prizes by responsibly maintaining the tools in their pencil cases.
Students may earn stars on the Super Improver wall by showing improvement in behavior and academics
I will be planning events and festivities, to reward hard work and good behavior.
Important to note- participation in any of these events is a REWARD, not a right. Students can and will be excluded from participating in any of the following listed above if behavior is lacking and/or work is not done.

13. Goal Setting
Setting a goal is very important for your child to do. It reminds them of what they have to work on.
Everyone has goals, including us teachers.
Your child will be setting goals over the course of the year.
It is important to help your child work on these goals at home as well.
Also, we would like you as the parent to talk to your child about their goals. Make it a daily discussion! 

14. Some examples of goals your child might have…
“I would like to learn 10 new words by the end of the month.”
“I want to be able to complete all my homework every night.”
“I would like to be more of an active listener in class.”
