2 Unit 2 Vocabulary Exempt (adj.) - grant relief from a rule or requirement. If you do well on your test you may be exempt from the final exam. Dismayed (v.) - struck with fear, dread, or consternation. He was a little dismayed when his schedule did not allow time for recreation. Intricate (adj.) - having many complexly arranged elements; elaborate. The details of the painting were so intricate the young artist knew he could not replicate them. Torrent (n.) - an overwhelming number or amount. The jewelry store was torrent with diamonds and jewels. Tentative (adj.)- hesitant or lacking confidence; unsettled in mind or opinion The parents were tentative to let their daughter date the football player.

Admonition (n.) - cautionary advice about something imminent. He was aware of his own admonition not to talk about his training. Plea (n.)- a humble request for help from someone in authority. The judge offered a plea deal to the defendant if he admitted to killing his wife. Trudge (v.) - walk heavily and firmly, as when weary, or through mud. The soldiers would trudge along after several days out on the battlefield. Yearn (v.) - desire strongly or persistently. The senior football players yearned to make the playoffs this year. Peril (n.)- a source of danger. The main character didn’t realize that the haunted house was a place of extreme peril.

Pulpit (n.) - a platform raised to give prominence to the person on it. When the preacher stepped into his pulpit everyone in the audience became silent. Brigade (n.) - army unit smaller than a division. The General needed a brigade of soldiers to retrieve the captured soldiers. Convulsion (n.) - violent, uncontrollable contractions of muscles. The athletes were experiencing convulsions after the game. Abyss (n.) - a bottomless gulf or pit. We watched as the bad guy in the movie fell into the abyss. Corruption (n.) - use of a position of trust for dishonest gain. The government is full of corrupt individuals.

5 Unit 2 Vocabulary (cont.)
Illustrious (adj.) - widely known and esteemed. The team honored the coaches illustrious career with a celebration. Infamy (n.) - a state of extreme dishonor. When someone dishonors their country they live in infamy for the rest of their days. Martyr (n.) - one who voluntarily suffers death. Don’t be a martyr, you know you didn’t commit that crime. Reverence (v.)- a feeling of profound respect for someone or something. The crowd bowed in reverence when the President walked in. Shackled (v.) - bound by chains fastened around the ankles. The murdered was shackled and left to rot in his cell until his hearing.
