Final Native American Assignment:
Part 1: For Part 1, you will be asked to list ONE cultural trait of each Native American tribe. (Ex. The Netsilik hunted seal) Part 2: For Part 2, you will write a 1 paragraph essay answering the following question: How did Native Americans use their environment to meet their basic needs?
13
Paragraph Parts: Thesis Statement: A thesis statement is your main argument. In your thesis, you should answer the question (reword it) and have reasons you will use in your paragraph to support your argument. Body Paragraph: The body paragraph should contain the specifics and support your thesis or main argument. Concluding Sentence: In your concluding sentence, restate your main idea or thesis.
14
Example: Sample Question: How do the Netsilik stay warm in the winter?
Sample Thesis: The Netsilik use resources in their environment to stay warm in the winter. Body Paragraph Support: For example, the Netsilik use caribou hide to make warm winter coats. The caribou hide is very thick, and the fur keeps the Netsilik warm in the cold environment. In addition to caribou coats, the Netsilik rely on the snow and ice in their environment to build warm shelters. These shelters, called igloos, are made of snow bricks cut from deep snow. The bricks are stacked on top of each other in a spiral, and snow is packed on the outside of the structure to keep the igloo insulated. Inside the igloo, body heat from the Netsilik rises and keeps the temperature consistent. Concluding sentence: This demonstrates how the Netsilik used their environment to survive the winter months.

Native American Crafts:
Choose a tribe that you would like to learn more about. Each tribal station has a video about how to make a craft that is common in that tribe’s culture. Watch the video and look at the pictures of the craft. Create a picture OR step-by-step list that includes patterns/details that are unique to the tribe.
