REMINDERS Launching a Research Project
Gather sources on the topic to preview Generate a list of subtopics that frequently occur Choose an accessible book to read for an overview Identify the text structure to help determine what’s important Pause at the end of chunks to recall the text in a structured way Record only the important things Read more texts on the same topic and synthesize notes on them

TEACHING POINT Today I want to teach you that when you are researching an argument, you need to figure out all the sides of the argument early on. One way readers do this is to focus on texts that lay out the argument clearly and then read to learn about both sides.

TEACHING It doesn’t do any good to only look at articles that seem to agree with the opinion because then you don’t learn anything new. Think about when you were in an argument with your parents and realized that you didn’t have a good reason to support your argument but they did. How embarrassing! Remember the statue of Justice and how she is blindfolded? We want to be like her or like judges, making FAIR arguments based on evidence from BOTH sides! Can you find an article that looks like it talks about BOTH sides in one place? This is a good place to start!

ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT Start looking at your resources. What seems to be the argument they are making? What article looks like it might talk about both sides in one place? What are the two or more sides? Now start making a T-chart of the sides and start collecting your research!
