Students trace the rise of the United States to its role as a world power in the twentieth century; Describe the Spanish-American War and U.S. expansion in the South Pacific. Objectives: 1. Students create and present google slides to teach the class about United States’ changes in foreign and domestic policy and ideology. 2. Students synthesize information from the group presentations in order to trace the rise of the United States as a world power. 3. Students corroborate information from the text book and the presentations to evaluate United States foreign policy in the Spanish- American War and U.S. expansion in the South Pacific through the completion of a graphic organizer.

The Brown man’s/Woman’s burden
Assignment: Now that you have read the White Man’s Burden, it is now your task to write a poem about the Brown Man/Woman’s Burden. Explain the social, political, and economic challenges that you face experience simply because they are not “White.” For this assignment you will create a poem that is about the same length, complexity, and detail as the White Man’s Burden poem.

Criterion for success: Must be 3 stanzas. Each Stanza must be 8 lines long. Each of the three stanzas must focus on each of the following categories of challenges facing the people of color today: Social challenges Economic Challenges Political Challenges

Directions Have students go to the GERTZ-RESSLER High school website and ask them to complete their do now and examine the agenda for today. Students go to the GERTZ-RESSLER high school website and take brief notes on “The Maine Explosion.” The Spanish American War Doc Analysis- Students will annotate the documents and complete the questions and graphic organizer. DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD. Students will work on their final draft of their poems, “The Brown Person’s Burden.” Final Draft will be due THURSDAY. If students have extra time there is a packet on the brown book shelves, “US Invasion of Cuba.” They may work on that.
