1. Towards Hydrocarbon Analogues of the Porphyrins

Dicarbaporphyrinoids: We have developed three routes for the synthesis of adj-dicarbaporphyrinoid systems with indene, azulene and benzene subunits. A series of dicarbaporphyrinoids have been prepared via fulvene intermediates, and this methodology has been adapted for the synthesis of a 22-oxa-21-carbaporphyrin. In addition, a mesoionic system with two adjacent azulene subunits has been isolated and structurally characterized.
