4. Facts
There are four molecules that are important for life: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
The word carbohydrate literally means “watered carbon”. This can be explained by the ration of carbon atoms to oxygen and hydrogen in a carbohydrate – 1:2:1. However, the general formula CH2O creates a false impression that the oxygen is supplied by water.
The oxygen in a carbohydrate comes from oxygen gas. The hydrogens come from a molecule of water, but only after releasing the oxygen.

5. Cellulose
Cellulose is the most abundant organic molecule on Earth. Few animals have the enzymes that allow them to hydrolyze cellulose. The structure of cellulose plays a roles, but it is the amount and type of available enzymes that determine whether or not cellulose is broken down.
Cows and termites are able to obtain energy from grass, hay or wood because protists and bacteria that live in their bodies hydrolyze the cellulose to glucose. Although humans cannot digest cellulose, it does play an important role in our diets as insoluble fiber.
