Expression A mathematical phrase
Hint: It will never have an equal sign or a greater than or less than sign Example: 2x + 1 (note: there is no =)

Equation A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are equal. Hint: It will always have an equal sign Example: 2x + 1 = 7

Inequality A mathematical sentence stating that two expressions are not necessarily equal. Hint: It will always have a greater than (>) or less than (<) sign. Example: 2x + 1 > 7

Term A number, variable, product, or quotient in an expression, equation, or inequality. Hint: Each piece of the expression is a term. Example: 2x + 1 = x is a term 1 and 7 are terms

Variable A symbol used to represent a number.
Hint: It is usually a letter. Example: 2x + 1 = x is the variable

Coefficient The number in front of the variable.
Example: 2x + 1 = is the coefficient
