Measurement Part 3
2
VOLUME of a SOLID Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.
To find the volume of a solid (cube) Volume = Length x Width x Height Example: cm x 3cm x 6cm = 36cm3
3
VOLUME (Continued) Volume of an irregular shape- we use water called Water Displacement We observe the change in water as it rises.
4
Subtract the water level with the object minus the water level without the object to find its volume. Displacement of water 4mL 3mL 4mL - 3mL = 1 mL = 1cm3
5
Water Displacement Find the volume of the following objects: Object
Volume before object (mL) Volume after object (mL) Volume of object (ml= cm3) Nut Bolt Blue pen Dice
6
VOLUME of a LIQUID The base unit for measuring the volume of liquids is the liter (L). Graduated cylinders are used to measure liquids.
7
Meniscus The curved line of water is called a meniscus.
Read the meniscus at the bottom of the curve.
8
Determining the Scale 1. Choose two numbers on the graduated scale and subtract them. 2. Count the spaces between the two numbers. 3. Take your answer from #1 and divide it by the number of spaces (#2). 4. This answer tells you the volume that each line represents.
9
Example What is the volume of the liquid in this graduated cylinder?
= 10 2. 5 spaces 3. 10/5 = 2 So, each line represents 2 mL. There is 96 mL of liquid in this graduated cylinder. 100mL 90mL 80mL 70mL 60mL
10
Try It! Chose a number. (6mL)
Subtract the next # below it. (6mL - 5mL = 1mL) Count the spaces between the two numbers (10 spaces) Divide 1mL/10 spaces. (1/10 = .1mL) Volume of the liquid = 5.7mL 6mL 5mL
