Update on Water Quality
April 11, 2018 Board Meeting Jim Flechtner, Executive Director
2
Summary Levels of GenX remain below the NCDHHS health goal of 140 parts per trillion Water stations are now open at Ogden Park and Veterans Park Continued monitoring of groundwater in the vicinity of ASR Pilot study at Sweeney has entered final stage Controlling contaminants at the source remains the best option for maintaining water quality, protecting the environment and ensuring associated costs are paid by discharger, not downstream communities.
3
Weekly Sampling of the Finished Water
4
CFPUA Water Stations Ogden Park and Veterans Park locations
Open every day from 8am to 8pm No cost option for concerned customers
5
CFPUA Aquifer Storage and Recovery Well Status
Approximately 50 million gallons of groundwater was removed from ASR Well Pumped from aquifer to sanitary sewer from September 2017 to December 2017 ASR site tested 28 ppt GenX in March 2018 WB#11 tested 34 ppt GenX in March 2018 Monitoring of groundwater in the vicinity of ASR and WB#11 continues per NCDEQ Notice All wells below 140 ppt health advisory level Work plan for continued sampling submitted to NCDEQ for comments NCDEQ requested to establish groundwater interim maximum allowable concentration

Sampling Results of Water at Sweeney Water Treatment Plant Pre-Pilot Study
We are currently testing for 20 per-fluorinated compounds that have standards. Levels of an additional 10 per-fluorinated compounds must be estimated due to the lack of testing methods. GenX consistently accounts for a small percentage of the per-fluorinated compounds that can be detected.
7
Findings from UNCW Work
Scientists at UNCW sample the raw and finished water at Sweeney weekly. To date, they have detected five new PFAS compounds not previously reported in the literature. Final report to CFPUA expected summer 2018
8
What We Still Do Not Know:
Effects of non-point sources on contaminant levels in the River Potential for accumulation in CFPUA treatment, storage and distribution systems Health effects of combined levels of all PFAS Effects of environmental accumulation
9
Water Quality Response Update
Pilot study is in final phase of testing GAC and Ion Exchange show effectiveness in removing per- fluorinated compounds from the drinking water CFPUA staff working with Black & Veatch to understand results and develop conclusions Release once a week updates to customers and the media Continue to follow UNCW progress in identifying new compounds Recommendation to Board: Expected May 9
