WARM UP 3-2 Check the origin too!
2
Day 2 Warm Up
3
Group Warm-Up On your big sheet of paper, show and explain how to test for all 5 types of symmetry using the tests from yesterday. Finally, include a graph showing any axes of symmetry
4
Group Warm Up 5 TESTS Y-axis X-axis Origin Y=x Y=-x
Be neat & clear. Anyone walking into the room should be able to read and understand your poster.

Lesson Essential Questions… How do we transform graphs?
3-2 Families of Graphs Lesson Essential Questions… How do we transform graphs? What are the different parent graphs that others are based on? VOCABULARY Parent graph Reflection Translation Dilation
6
Families of Graphs On graph paper, graph each of the following “parent” functions. y=1 (constant) y=x (linear) y=x2 (quadratic) y=x3 (cubic) y= (square root) y=|x| (absolute value) y=[x] (greatest integer) y=1/x (reciprocal)
7
Reflections (flips) How would you reflect y = across the y-axis
To reflect across y-axis, change (x) to (-x) To reflect across x-axis, change (y) to (-y) AND simplify
8
Translations (shifts)
Translate y=x2 each of the following ways and write the equation: 2 up 3 down 1 right 4 left
9
Dilations (widen/narrow)
What would happen to the parent function y = |x| in each situation? y=|3x| y=|1/3x|
10
Dilations (widen/narrow)
What would happen to the parent function y = x2 in each situation? y= 2 x2 y=1/2 x2
11
SUMMARY - Dilations Given: y = a*f(x) What happens when a > 1
Graph narrows Graph widens No change
