Plant Reproduction In flowering plants and trees Angiosperms
2
Most flowers have 4 basic parts.
petals pistil stamen sepals
3
Some floral structures are not needed for reproduction.
sepals leaf-like structures which protect the flower before blooming petals Colorful to attract pollinators such as insects, birds, etc.
4
Some floral structures are essential for reproduction to occur.
pistil female organ, produces egg(s) stamens male organs, produce sperm in pollen grains
5
Pistils ( ) are made of 3 parts.
stigma style ovary produces egg(s)
6
Stamens are made of 2 parts.
anther produces pollen filament
7
Identify the structures in this flower.
petal stigma pistil style anther stamen filament Where is the ovary? Where are the sepals?
8
When pollen lands on the stigma, this process is called pollination.
Flowers can self-pollinate or cross pollinate
9
There are 2 types of pollination.
When pollen lands on a stigma of the same flower, this is self-pollination.
10
When pollen lands on a stigma of a separate flower, this is cross-pollination.
11
Pollination agents include wind, water, and organisms.
12
Fertilization occurs when the sperm reaches and unites with the egg.
They become one new cell called a zygote. The zygote grows and develops into a seed. zygote zygote
13
The ovary grows into a protective fruit.
This means that anything you eat with a seed(s) is a ripened ovary.
14
Maturing Ovary
15
Some plants develop fleshy fruits like apples, grapes, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
Other plants develop dry fruits such as peanuts and walnuts, or grains like wheat, barley, and rice.
16
Reproduction
17
Which of these are fruits (ripened ovaries)?
Hint: If it has a seed, it’s a fruit.
18
Seed Dispersal What determines how seeds are dispersed?
Why are seeds dispersed?
19
In Gymnosperms a.k.a conifers, pine trees, evergreens
Reproduction In Gymnosperms a.k.a conifers, pine trees, evergreens
20
What are gymnosperms? Produce seeds protected in woody structures called cones.
21
The Process Male cones produce pollen (sperm)
Female cones produce ovule or eggs Pollinated by wind
