Baseline (Aiming for 4): Relate the
thermal conductivities of a material to the uses of that material. Further (Aiming for 6): Describe the changes in the behaviour of the particles in a material as the temperature increases Challenge (Aiming for 8): Explain the different thermal conductivities of materials using the free electron and lattice vibration explanations of conduction.
2
Aiming for 4 Conclusion Some material have a higher thermal conductivity that others. These materials prevent or reduce the rate of energy transfer through them. The materials are called insulators.
3
Aiming for 6 - 8 Conclusion
The energy transfer per second through a later of insulating material depends on: The temperature difference across the material. The thickness of the material. The thermal conductivity of the material.
