Chapter 9 1

Fractures
3
Fractures Greenstick fracture is an incomplete break in a long bone shaft in which the bone in partially bent. Longitudinal fracture is a break in which the bone splits or cracks lengthwise. Oblique or spiral fracture is an oblique or diagonal break that occurs when one end of the bone receives a torsion while the other end remains fixed.
4
Avulsion Fractures An avulsion fracture occurs most commonly when a person sprains a ligament or strains a tendon. A piece of bone is torn away from the point where the ligament/tendon is attached.
5
Stress Fracture A stress fracture is caused by repeated stress over a period of time. May not show up on an x-ray.
6
Comminuted Fracture A comminuted fracture is having three or more fragments at the fracture site. Common in contact sports.
7
Compound Fractures An open fracture or compound fracture occurs when the bone breaks through the skin. Not all compound fractures are obvious.
12
Transverse Fracture A transverse fracture is a break that occurs across the middle of a bone at a right angle. Results from a direct blow to the bone.

Treatment for Fractures
Activate EMS (Call 911)- if fracture is life threatening. Check the area below the fracture for distal circulation and sensation. Avoid elevating the injured limb to prevent further injury. Splint in the most comfortable position. Apply ice.
