1 Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism, Commensalism and Parasitism

2 Commensalism Commensalism is a relationship between two living organisms where one benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped.

3 The clownfish lives among the forests of tentacles of an anemone and is protected from potential predators.

4 Some birds live among cattle to eat the insects stirred up as the cattle walks.
One example are egrets who hunt for insects who hunt for insects near a grazing animal’s mouth.

5 One animal may attach itself to another for transportation, such as barnacles attaching to shells or whales. Shrimp riding on sea slugs.

6 One species uses a second organism for housing, such as small mammals or birds that live in holes.

7 Parasitism One organism, usually the physically smaller of the two (the parasite), benefits and the other (the host) is harmed.

8 Ticks and fleas (parasites) that live in a host animal’s fur bite the animal and drink it’s blood.

9 Insects, such as mosquitos, that feed on a host are parasites
Tapeworm living in a host’s gut

10 Tomato Hornworm with wasp eggs
Vines growing on trees Tomato Hornworm with wasp eggs

11 Both species benefit from the interaction.
Mutualism Both species benefit from the interaction.

12 Flower and their pollinators (for example, bees and hummingbirds gather nectar and spread pollen)

13 Birds and mammals eat berries and fruits while the plant benefits by the dispersal of its seeds.

14 Egyptian Plover eats the food stuck in a crocodile’s mouth
Egyptian Plover eats the food stuck in a crocodile’s mouth. The crocodile gets its teeth cleaned and the plover gets nutrition. Birds eat the insects from the skin of animals.

15 Many herbivores such as cows, sheep, deer, horses and rabbits depend on bacteria that live in their stomachs to break down the plant material.

16 Algae covers coral reefs
Algae covers coral reefs. The corals get food and the algae gets protection.
