Logos Logic or Reasoning “What is the structure of the text?” Structure and Content of text.

8 Logos Structure: Narrative? (Events follow in chronological order … inclusion of stories …) - Parallels, juxtapositions, analogies, compare/contrast? (Do the writers ask the audience to understand one event/situation through its similarities to another?)

9 Logos Structure: Problem – Solution arrangements (Does the author present a problem in the text and provide a possible solution to said problem?)

10 Once you figure out the structure, ask yourself,
Logos Structure: Once you figure out the structure, ask yourself, “How does the arrangement of this text help the author persuade and appeal to the specific audience of the writing you are analyzing?”

11 Smaller Aspects of Logos
Inductive reasoning: A logic which goes from specific cases to a more general statement. Deductive reasoning: A logic which goes from a general statement to a specific instance / conclusion.

12 Smaller Aspects of Logos
These are important aspects to know, but I don’t expect you all to be experts of inductive/deductive reasoning.

13 Deductive reasoning: A logic which goes from a general statement to a specific instance / conclusion. All students eat cake. Jake is a student at TTU. Therefore, Jake eats cake. All math majors study in the library. Jasmine is a math major. Therefore, Jasmine studies in the library. Jake played video games all weekend and turned in his work late. Jake turned in their work late and got a bad grade. Playing video games leads to bad grades.

14 Inductive reasoning: A logic which goes from specific cases to a more general statement.
Maria moved here from New York. Maria has blonde hair. Therefore, people from New York have blonde hair.

15 Appeals to an audience’s emotion, needs, values … (emotional appeal)
Pathos Appeals to an audience’s emotion, needs, values … (emotional appeal)
