1 Technologies in Movies - Surrogates -
Group #7 Mateo, Jiyeon, Seoyoung, & K.K.

2 1-1. Functions & How it is used
Replacing physical everyday life activities to surrogates People are able to live their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes using the surrogates instead of the real body REAL BODY CONTROL SURROGATE

3 1-2. Design Can be altered or customized by the preference of the users Built as sexier, physically perfect mechanical representations of users

4 2. Obstacles in adoption of the surrogates
Difficulty in finding the mechanism to accurately linking one’s mind to surrogates’ actions (Successful marriage between bio-technology and robot-technology) Difficulty in persuading customers of explaining the safety and the accuracy of the technology

5 3. Consequences of the Technology
Benefits: ”Do what you want, Be what you want” Harms: ”Unplug from your chairs” Upgraded human – speed, strength, agility, a set of six-pack abs, full head of hair and so on No pain or fear, safer life – any harm on surrogates doesn’t affect their human operators No crime – central surrogate control system Use for disabled people Humanity - as surrogates become more human, we become less so Broken relationship - Greer and his wife only come face to face in each one’s surrogate Dangers of misuse or abuse

6 4. Institutional Mechanism
Laws & Government Policy Clear clarifications on the fields where surrogates could be used ex) Aerospace industry, Mining industry Restricting the abuse and the misuse of the surrogates technology ex) Applying same sentence to the user for surrogate’s committing a crime

7 4. Institutional Mechanism(cont.)
Culture & Norm Considerable communications should be made before application of the technology The user of the surrogates should be responsible for all the actions made by the surrogates

8 5-1. Feasibility of the adoption of the technology in the future
YES!!! In 2007, a robot which could grab objects and move it to exactly the place the user wanted to was created. This was done through brainwaves. But it could not execute more complex actions due to AI limitations. It could be used to operate in hazardous environment, but it will probably not used as in the movie.

9 5-2. When & How? By 2050, a fairly sophisticated robot could be launched, but it will take more than this to become completely commercialized. The biggest impediment is the AI. Currently, a more sophisticated AI which can process more complex instructions is needed. The robot will become available after the development of more sophisticated AI algorithms.
