1 Georgia Milestones Parent Workshop
Presented by: Germaine Harden-Brooks, District LILT Katie Breedlove, District MILT Modified from a Presentation Created by: Whitney Pasch, Elementary ELA TOSA Sarah Marshall, Elementary Mathematics TOSA Henry county schools

2 Literacy

3 So what’s at the Core? english-language-arts/

4 Three Shifts in ELA with Common Core

5 Shift One How have you seen this in the books your students are bringing home? How can you help at home?

6 Reading and Writing Grounded in Text Based Evidence
Shift Two Reading and Writing Grounded in Text Based Evidence Where in the text did you see that? Where did the author say that? Show me the words that made you think that. What is happening in this paragraph?

7 Shift Three: Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary

8 CRCT vs Georgia Milestones 3rd Grade

9 CRCT vs Georgia Milestones-8th Grade

10 Georgia Milestone 9th Grade Literature

11 What are we doing at HCS to help your students?
Close Reading

12 What are the steps to a Close Read?

13 RACE to perfect Constructed Response Answers
Restate Answer Cite Evidence from the text Explain/Expand

14 What can you do at home? Read with your child- Do a Close Read!!
Ask open-ended questions after reading

15 Math

16 Why does Math look so different?
Math Then Math Now

17 Math Reasoning for a New Age
Many of us learned mathematics as a set of disconnected rules, facts, and procedures. The challenge is to foster true numerical reasoning by getting students to go beyond the memorized rules and procedures.

18 Let’s Explore a Task Draw a game piece out of your bucket, don’t let your partner see  Each player will tell the partner the total value of their coins. Players will take turns asking each other yes/no questions to try to solve what coins you have, and how many coins you have.

19 How do we foster reasoning?
FOCUS: Less standards COHERENCE: More Connections RIGOR: Higher Order Thinking

20 Number Talk

21

22 Mathematize their world!
How can I help at home? Mathematize their world! Ask students to explain their thinking using pictures, numbers and words

23 Where/how can I learn? LearnZillion Illustrative Mathematics

24 Why has our test changed?
“Our previous assessment, the CRCT, set some of the lowest expectations for student proficiency in the nation, and that cannot continue. Georgia Milestones sets higher standards for our students and evens the playing field with the rest of the nation – and that’s essential if our students are going to succeed in college and their chosen careers, both of which are nationally competitive arenas. We will continue to increase our supports for both students and teachers to ensure this test is more meaningful for all involved.” -Richard Woods, State School Superintendent For more info: Information on this slide was found within the GaDOE Press Release, “First Georgia Milestones test results released"

33 Math Constructed Response: Noteworthy Trends
For multistep processes, students were sometimes able to start the process correctly but were unsure how to complete the process. Students may not know key math terms or confuses terms (e.g., complimentary vs. supplementary; or diameter vs. radius) When asked to provide an explanation, students sometimes tended to restate the information given. Students used the wrong operation – when in doubt, add. Students do not answer the question that is asked: Example: the prompt provides a scenario and asks for the probability of two different outcomes both occurring; the students provides the two individual probabilities instead. For more information: Information on this slide were found with the GaDOE Assessment Presentation, "GACIS Presentation, September 2015"

34 General Testing Parameters

35 Georgia Milestones: General Testing Parameters
ELA will consist of 3 sections Section 3 will focus mainly on writing GSE-aligned beginning with Winter 2015 Mathematics will consist of 2 sections including a short no-calculator sub-section in grades 6-high school – located at the beginning of Section 1 Science will consist of 2 sections Social Studies will consist of 2 sections

41 Achievement Levels Beginning Learners do not yet demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students need substantial academic support to be prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness. Developing Learners demonstrate partial proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students need additional academic support to ensure success in the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness. Proficient Learners demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are prepared for the next grade level or course and are on track for college and career readiness. Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are well prepared for the next grade level or course and are well prepared for college and career readiness.

42 Promotion/Retention Status
Determines promotion/retention status in grade 3 (reading only), grade 5 (reading and mathematics), and grade 8 (reading and mathematics) Reading: a student who has a Below Grade Level Reading status will require remediation and retesting in ELA Mathematics: a student who is classified as a Beginning Learner will require remediation and retesting in mathematics
